This paper presents the requirements and detailed design method for a voltage-controlled oscillator. The oscillator operates over 5 to 6 GHz and is suitable for 802.11a wireless networking applications. The oscillator is implemented as a custom GaAs integrated circuit, which was designed using the fast time-to-market and low risk design approach presented.
